ARTicipation Week and Arts on the Square 2016

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of Arts on the Square. We are so pleased to be planning the finest of all eclectic Arts, Music, Dance, Poetry and Workshops for this Annual wonderful weekend in Waupaca.

Below you will find details about the ARTicpation events that will be occurring thought the week preceding AOTS. Most of these events are sponsored in full by our fantastic retailers.  Please let them know you appreciate their support of the arts in our community.  And….please plan to attend every single thing!

ARTicipation: a week of the arts in Waupaca!

Sunday, August 14: Chalk O’ The Town, sponsored by Waupaca, King & In Between Retailers Group.

An enduring and growing tradition, our local Businesses decorate sidewalks ( or windows ) to prepare Waupaca for the upcoming festivities. 3 winners are awarded for “best in show” on Thursday Aug 18. Stop downtown and all around during the week to watch the progress as the artists create beauty on the streets and windows of Waupaca!

Monday, August 15: Open Mic Jam at the Art Emporium!

Young people, come on down and share a song at this first ever open mic hosted at the Arts Emporium on Union Street, next to Weasel’s! Waupaca’s younger generation is rich in musical talent, join the fun! 7pm-10pm, free admission!

Tuesday, August 16: Live Music with the Tom McComb Quartet at Little Fat Gretchen’s Café on Main Street, Downtown Waupaca.

Enjoy a fun evening of live music, with the Tom McComb Quartet.

Tom and Jenny McComb are a guitar/vocal duo. They have been performing together for about 20 years, and have grown in their musical tastes together, as they started out with Jazz standards, discovered Blossom Dearie, learned classic Mexican pop, fell in love with Bossa Nova, rediscovered classic rock and pop, discovered indie folk and pop, and on, and on! sitting in with them are Waupaca drummer Kevin Knopp and Stevens Point Stand up Bassist Dave Story. 6:30-8:30 at Little Fat Gretchen’s, $5 cover charge.

 
Wednesday August 17: Summer Nights Concert featuring MoeJoe and Flipside

The last in the WCAB Summer Nights 3 concert series, Tony Wagner’s MoeJoe and Flipside helps us get ready for Arts on the Square! Regionally loved for their blues and grooves, come and dance along with MoeJoe at Waupaca’s South Park, overlooking beautiful Shadow Lake! Bring a lawn chair, and come on down to enjoy a beer or beverage, some great Mexican food from Mr. Taco, and the great music of MoJoe and Flipside! No carry in’s please. This is a free concert, bring along an item to donate to Waupaca’s Food Pantry!

Thursday August 18: a full day of ARTicipation events for families!

  • Adopt a Square on the Square – Youth Chalking, 2:00-6:00 pm
    From 2-5pm, the second annual Waupaca King and In Between businesses sponsor youth artists chalking squares around City Square. Youth of all ages are assigned a square upon arrival, and will receive a free box of chalk sp that they can work on creating a collage of color and creativity to prepare the festival grounds for Arts on the Square! Best squares will win a prize. Refreshments will be served!
  • The afternoon culminates at 6:00 pm with a concert by the Waupaca Middle School Band in the Historic Bandstand, and chalking awards!
  • Children’s ARTBike Parade!
    Kids and families convene at Waupaca’s South Park to decorate their bicycle at 4:00pm. Then, join the parade to Waupaca’s downtown, just in time for the Middle School Band Concert! Participants must have a bicycle helmet to join the parade. All ages can join the fun! Refreshments will be served downtown at the square!

 

Thursday Night Live Music with the Desperate Otto’s, on the deck, at Simpson’s Restaurant 7:00-11 pm

A great way to end this fun day is with live music out on the deck at Simpson’s Restaurant! Stop down after the chalking and parade, have a bite and a drink, and groove to the music!

Formed by Del Weed and Jeff Cutts in 2003, playing classic country and originals, the “Ottos” can draw from a 200 song set list. Never-to-be-pigeon-holed we will boogie your woogie, rock your roll, swing your thing, rock your billy and twang your country. You will hear and feel the heart and soul of a good-time band!
