Stand With Waupaca
Sponsor one of The Arts Board’s socially distant or virtual events. Together, we can make it through this pandemic.
This summer, WCAB received three unsolicited grants for special projects we created when the pandemic forced us to cancel our premier summer events -- ARTicipation Week, Arts on the Square, and the Summer Nights South Park concerts.
At the beginning of the pandemic, WCAB knew Waupaca residents would need everyday art in their lives to get through the crises, and we were devastated when we realized we couldn’t host our normal summer events. So together, over Zoom, the WCAB board brainstormed socially distant events that would support Waupaca.
Knowing that arts organizations, like WCAB, are struggling during the pandemic, The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region presented WCAB with a general grant of $500. We used their grant to fund our new Summer Craft Café — a 10-week free program that provided residents with five complete art project kits, available in two-week increments.
Distributed through the Waupaca Area Library, The Craft Café art kits included 3D collage, faux stained glass, painted pet rocks, clay sculpture, and quilt squares. WCAB volunteers are now creating a special Waupaca Community Quilt, using the 12x12 quilt squares created by community members. The Waupaca Quilt will be on display later this fall.
WCAB received two other grants in support of our first Community Mural Project, which is now in the planning stages. Through a Tourism Development Grant, the Waupaca Area Convention & Visitors Bureau granted WCAB $2500, and Community First Credit Union granted $3500.
A mural selection committee, comprised of WCAB board members, downtown Waupaca business owners, artists, and Waupaca city officials, is planning the mural for the two-story side wall of the Antiques on Main building at 202 S. Main St. The planned mural wall faces West Union Street, and should be completed by winter.
We were so surprised and pleased to receive both mural grants from organizations that have been faithful funders of Arts on the Square. We are very grateful that both groups saw value in what WCAB is trying to do for the community during this very difficult time.
